Under 16s lose in National Cup Under 16s lose in National Cup

LEIGH EAST 0 SHEVINGTON SHARKS 30

On Sunday Leigh East Under 16s faced their first test of the season against Shevington and despite a spirited performance, succumbed to defeat.

The squad battled commendably against a team from a higher division in the BARLA National Cup. Shevington Sharks came to town. There were four players with real star pedigree in the visitors ranks from fullback Anthony Martin, second row Ryan Wolfenden and substitutes Harry Moxham and Harry Cruickshanks.

A couple of minutes into the game, Shevington scored first when Wolfenden stormed home from fifty metres.

Minutes later Sam Halsall crossed in support of Matty Ellis for a second try which Ellis converted.

East responded when Dylan Kelly swept up an error and went thirty metres. Kieran Bellamy was busy and the hosts looked more likely to break through impressive fullback Jack Broxton however it was the visitors that scored again. Martins ran past four defenders and made thirty metres. Moxham also had a good run and Halsall put wing Matty Hughes in at the corner.

With the half ticking down an error put pressure on East and Harry Cruickshanks crossed from close range, Matty Rodgers goaled and it was 20-0 to the Sharks.

A good kick off from East forced a drop out but the hosts couldn't take advantage and Shevington advanced downfield.

East came up with a super play on their own line when Matty Rudd passed wide for Kelly to charge forward and make 60 metres.  A lovely kick from Bellamy bounced up for Ethan Mather but the defence came in.

Shevington breathed a sigh of relief and held that 20-0 advantage at the break.

In the second half, East made a promising start but Mather was injured after a big tackle on Josh Wilde. Sadly he was brought off on a board and played no further part but thankfully hasn't suffered any serious after effects from the collision.

After applying pressure, Shevington eventually found a way through a resolute East line when Hughes scored again after good passing to the right.

Despite trailling 24-0, East defended superbly with Broxton  effecting four  try saving tackles in the second half but five minutes from time the visitors got a sixth try when Moxham dived over for his second and Rodgers converted to bring about the final 30-0 score.
