Road win for East first team at Gateshead Road win for East first team at Gateshead

Gateshead Storm 18

Leigh East 30

Leigh East prevailed on the road with a 30-18 success at Gateshead. Although this was a scrappy clash after the first twenty minutes, East ultimately had too much firepower for the hosts.

The visitors made a great start with an early try for Andrew Gregson and Will Ludlow kept up his good form and added his second try of the season. With Adam Holland finding his range with the boot East were in cruise control at 12-0 and looked set for a huge win when Zac Nicholls got over for his fifth try of the season and Holland converted.

Back came the hosts with two unconverted tries by Craig Baker and Michael Mitchell to close the half at 8-18.

Gateshead grabbed a third try shortly after the start of the second half. David Cash was the scorer and this time Zach Clark converted to close the deficit to 14-18.

Leigh East are made of sterner stuff these days and took control of the game with touchdowns for Jordan Hellam and Holland who increased his match tally to five goals. That gave the visitors a handy 30-14 advantage and although Gateshead scored a fourth try from Mack MaCallan, East held out further to pick up their fourth win in a row, maintaining their spot at the top of National Conference Division Three.
