LEIGH EAST 32 CULCHETH EAGLES 20

A hat-trick from Ryan Green was the highlight as Leigh East NWML side defeated Culcheth Eagles 32-20 in an open friendly at Ledgard Avenue on Saturday.

Cameron Gater opened the scoring with a smart finish after 17 minutes from the visitors but east hit right back with the first of Green's treble seeing him dart through a gap and angle to the posts from close range. The second Leigh East try was a thing of beauty as Andy Bradshaw thundered downfield after stepping into an opening and Green trailed his inside, taking a pass before running the rest of the way. Daryl Devlin added both goals.

Leigh East remained on top and Dale Parkinson emphasised their superiority before the break, crossing on the left after a wide ball created space.

Leading 16-4 at halftime, things got better for Leigh East shortly after the start of the second half when Green kicked over and won the race to the ball for his third try. Lenny Ball stepped up to convert, the first of two goals for the centre.

Culcheth made a comeback with two tries in three minutes through Brad Taylor and Max Hewitt with Paul Martin adding a goal but East claimed a crucial try when a combination of a smart line, brute strength and a burst of pace took Adam Whiteside over the line for Ball to make it 28-14. Culcheth hit back with a try from player coach Darryl Appleby and Martin goaled, but East made sure when the impressive Craig Connor burst through on an angle out wide to secure the win for East.
