NCL: East pick up road win at Gateshead NCL: East pick up road win at Gateshead

Gateshead Storm 4

Leigh East 18

Leigh East hit the top of Division Three thanks to a hard-fought win in Gateshead. Work commitments and other unavailabilities meant that coaches Martin Roden and Lee Rowley named themselves in the East side. Roden started the game at halfback and scored the first try after 22 minutes, goaled by fullback Ellis Noon.

Up until this point it had been tough going for both teams and they went at each other. It was East that extended their advantage in the 27th minute through hooker Pat Rainford. Noon was once again on target with the conversion and the visitors led 12-0 at half-time.

Noon extended Leigh East's advantage to three scores, with a converted try after 48 minutes which proved too much of a gap for Gateshead to bridge although the visitors did their level best to assist when first Dean Balmer (66 minutes - high tackle) and Ben Sims (74 minutes - late tackle) were sinbinned. Storm got themselves on the board with a try from Michael Mitchell and fullback James Pocklington impressed but it was to be East's day with Louis Else being adjudged man-of-the-match.
