Masters say “Au revoir” and “Willkommen” at Leigh East Masters say “Au revoir” and “Willkommen” at Leigh East

Saturday 11th March proved another historic day at Leigh East as they played hosts to Rylands and Leyland Masters.

Over 50 lads were out playing on the day, but the day had greater significance to two of the Leigh East players.

Masters in UK said "au revoir" to Red shorter Steve Marsden, playing his last game before emigrating to La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast. And Masters RL said "Willkommen" to Stefan Schmitt, originally from Dusseldorf in Germany now living in Leigh, who played his first game of Masters at thirty-eight in white shorts.

Stefan was persuaded to have a game after his son started to play in the cubs at Leigh East. He was roped in to help out with the lads. Masters Rugby League then became a natural progression! Stefan enjoyed his experience and after the game confirmed that he will be available for selection again!

In the case of Steve, he has promised to find some Masters Rugby on the continent.

In total three games were played. All were very entertaining and played at a quick pace on the artificial pitch with a good mix of young and old Masters showing their skills.

After the games, everyone enjoyed the hospitality provided by Leigh East.

The three teams will be back in action in two weeks' time at the Lancashire Clubs Festival at Hindley on Saturday 25th March.
