LEIGH EAST 16 ASKAM 40

Leigh East found Cumbrian visitors Askam too hot to handle on one of the warmest days of the year.

Injury forced a reshuffle at halfback after Tom Worthington was declared unfit with Martin Keavney coming in alongside Ihaka Watene. It was Watene that saw a disallowed try after seven minutes following good link up play with Sam Grainey and Adam Holland.

After a solid opening ten minutes the Cumbrian visitors took control on the back of good forward work from the likes of Thomas Hopkins and Gary Bolton. A defence splitting pass from mercurial stand-off Mark Tyson put Thomas Butler over with Adam Jackson adding the first of eight goals.

A second Askam try came after 15 minutes when former Barrow prop Jamie Butler steamed under the posts and worse was to follow for the hosts when a good run from Hopkins set the position for a further raid and full back Russell Bolton touched down.

East were shell-shocked and conceded a further penalty for holding down after 24 minutes. This was dispatched to the posts by Jackson and it was 0-20. Watene tried all he knew to get the hosts back in the contest but a wide pass was put down by Chris Dootson and Tyson relieved pressure with an excellent forty metre run.

Finally the hosts had their breakthrough after half an hour when Watene drifted right and cleverly delayed his pass for Sam Grainey to go over unopposed but that went unconverted.

Trailing 4-20, East made a better start to the second half with only the post denying Adam Wilkes. East flooded forward but Keavney saw his pass picked off by Tyson. Askam were awarded a penalty seconds later and Jackson added a further two points to the tally. After 50 minutes the halfback repeated the tonic following another penalty and East trailed 4-24.

Wilkes was not to be denied a second time, scoring by the posts after 55 minutes for Holland to goal, but any hopes went west when Hopkins marauded down the left and Ben Lewney stormed to the line in support two minutes later.

Josh Adudwumaa had a great run but this went unrewarded and Easts were undone after 66 minutes when Lewney forced his way over from close range. East then lost Andrew Ball having already seen Tom Fletcher and Craig Wingfield unable to take the field again. Askam then claimed their sixth and final try from a kick. Thomas Askew palmed the ball down and Cameron Cooper was quickest to react.

Leigh East did rally to claim consolation with Dootson taking Watene's pass to zip over in the corner. Holland kicked the goal from the touchline but it could not gloss over the 16-40 loss.
