The visitors scored first in the fourth minute when debutant Ryan Lewis was quickest to a low kick and Tom Worthington landed the first of three goals. At this stage the visitors were good value, kicking and tackling well.

The lead lasted ten minutes before Askam drew level when prop Liam Saunders responded for the hosts and Kristin Tyson kicking the first of his six goal haul.

Leigh East continued to take the game to their hosts playing with determination and plenty of enthusiasm. As a result of this and some good passing, Josh Adudwumaa scored in the corner for East with Worthington goaling from wide out. It was around this stage that East lost Tom Wood but he was replaced by their third debutant James Teixeira who played superbly.

The visitors led 12-6 and looked in good touch before Askam scored twelve points without reply through tries by Jake Spedding and Tom Butler. Tyson nudged over a conversion and kicked a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give the hosts a narrow six point advantage.

Trailing 18-12, Leigh East needed a good start to the new half but sadly, the exact opposite occurred when Worthington saw his kick-off catch in the breeze and sail out on the full.

This gave Askam the impetus needed as Tom Hopkins crashed through for his first try. Jack Cairns and Brad Kavanagh added further tries during a purple spell as the hosts threatened to run away with the game. With Tyson on form with the boot, Askam led 34-12.

East responded gamely in the final quarter. Tom Worthington scored a smart try, forcing his way over at the corner and converting brilliantly from the touchline but the final word was Askam's when Hopkins muscled over for his second try. Tyson brought up the 40 with his final goal to crown a home victory for the Cumbrians.

Best for the visitors were Worthington, Teixeira and fullback James Parkinson.

East now have a week off before a crunch home game with Drighlington.
