LEIGH EAST 32 HINDLEY 22

Leigh East's annual Memorial Cup game in honour of club stalwart John Lewis brought an entertaining clash against Hindley.

The visitors hit the front after 15 minutes when wide passing created enough space for Paul Hersnip to surge over. That went unconverted and East hit back quickly when Andrew Ball fed Connor Grainey and the prop got over the line. Ellis Noon goaled but Hindley made the most of two errors from the hosts to lead 16-6 at the break. The first came following a fumble. Halfback Chris Scarborough reacted quickest, kicking forward for Connor Ward to win the race for the touchdown. Then with East again on the attack, an attempted chip kick from Noon went straight into the outstretched hands of stand-off Joe Heaton who sped down the ground to score.

Noon made amends early in the second half when he shot through a gap for a well-taken try and although Lewis Thornhill scored at the side of the posts for Hindley with Scarborough adding his third goal. Leigh East then got on the front foot and blasted in for four tries without reply. First exciting fullback Kieron Prescott crossed in support of Noon, then wide passing created a try for Danny Quirk and Adam Holand converted from the touchline. Next Ben Sims sped away from halfway although his celebrations saw him sinbinned. Hindley had their own issues when a confrontation saw Thornhill red-carded and East finished the game well with Grainey striding over from Ball's pass in the last couple of minutes, allowing Holland the chance to add his third goal and confirm the 32-22 victory.
