East Leeds win NCL opener East Leeds win NCL opener

LEIGH EAST 4 EAST LEEDS 22

It was a stormy affair at Ledgard Avenue as both teams struggled to play in the midst of squally conditions in the first half and gradually lost patience with each other. A scoreless first half was punctuated by a disallowed try from home fullback and man-of-the-match Kieron Prescott.

The visitors were reduced to 12 men after 33 minutes when youthful halfback Luke Littlewood was sinbinned for a swinging arm and then before the break Prescott from Leigh East and the otherwise impressive East Leeds back row forward Ben Walkin were sent to the sinbin for pushing each other following a brief coming together between the teams.

Although Leigh East perhaps shaded the first half, the second brought more precision from East Leeds. Thankfully the storm had swept through by this time and they began to play some constructive rugby league, first stand-off Nathan Conroy, who kicked also three goals, shot through the line before finding Jake Normington on the inside, then some alert play on the right saw wing Adam Wrigg dive over.

Leigh East responded with a nice wingers finish from Aaron Noon but just as they were back in the game another brief skirmish resulted in Nathan Gaskell being yellow carded for pushing and East Leeds took full advantage scoring two tries in his absence to take the win. First hooker Luke Tomlinson plunged over from close range before Conroy handed on for Normington to score his second try by the posts for Conroy to goal and confirm an 18 point winning margin.
